You should hear what my parents are saying!

Rupert Holmes made personal ads famous at the very end of the 1970s with “Escape (The Piña Colada Song),” but they were still viewed with deep suspicion by many people. (Actually, I guess that hasn’t changed much, even now that the personals have moved from the classified ads to the Internet.) As Carlie’s father warns her, “There are so many weirdos running around these days.” But Carlie doesn’t have a lot of other options: She’s a struggling artist working a temp job at an accounting firm during tax season, where all the men “sit there like robots, punching their desk calculators.”

This story turns out to have a lot of meat to it. Carlie’s artistic ambitions clash with her working class parents’ aspirations for her and her sister to “get ahead in the world” (especially if they marry well). Like Our Marry-First, Love-Later Romance, it can feel like a compressed novel. Whoever wrote this one was definitely having fun.
